The best time for a South African safari? The dry winter period from May to September!
The grass is short and sparse, making it easy to spot game from a distance. The animals congregate around the waterholes to quench their thirst. The weather is also mild and comfortable (although you’ll need to wrap up after sunset and on those early morning game drives!).
Looking for the ultimate safari accommodation inside Mabula Private Game Reserve? There are so many reasons why a mid-year bush break at Safari Plains is simply unmissable – but here are five to start with…
1. You get five-star for less!
You can’t put a price on a luxury mid-year getaway in the bushveld – unless you’re staying at Safari Plains. Book now from just R3,148 per person sharing per night in a Safari Suite. This rate includes accommodation, three meals per day, selected beverages, and two daily game drives.
2. Your safari makes a difference
As a visitor, you always get so much out of your time spent in the bush, so it’s wonderful to know that your safari gives something back in return. Did you know the Mabula Private Game Reserve is home to many conservation projects? Your stay contributes to keeping these projects afloat. From the Mabula Ground Hornbill Project to the Cheetah Release Project, Mabula Private Game Reserve is at the forefront of sustainability and conservation in South Africa.
3. The whole family is welcome
Many five-star safari lodges are reserved for adults, but Safari Plains is 100% child-friendly, welcoming kids of all ages. We have:
- An engaging kids’ programme: Our field guides accompany the children on Bumble Safaris and interactive nature walks, where they can learn all about the many animals and ecosystems of the bush. Our kids’ programme also includes kiddies’ yoga on the lawn, arts and crafts, and movies.
- A delicious kids’ menu: From French toast fingers with honey to juicy chicken burgers and moreish pasta with cheese sauce, there’s something on the menu for even the fussiest little eaters at Safari Plains. Plus, we ensure there aren’t any grumbling tummies by serving an earlier dinner for the children.
- Babysitting services: Our childminders are on call to keep an eye on the little ones so that mom and dad can also enjoy some time out.
- Lots of little extras: If all the above wasn’t enough, Safari Plains also offers various little extras for the children, such as a hot chocolate welcome drink and a turn-down service that includes a fruit lolly and children’s bedtime story on each child’s pillow.
5. We have winter activities
Just because there’s a mild chill in the air doesn’t mean you have to stay bundled up indoors! The warm South African sun shines abundantly and chases the cold away from as early as 9 am, leaving you with the entire day to enjoy the beauty of the bushveld.
Here are a few of our safari activities to look forward to:
- Guided bush walks: Get up bright and early, pull on your khakis, grab your jacket, and lace up your walking shoes. Our winter nature walks kick off at 6:30 am when the bush is stirring with life and many of the animals are out searching for their breakfast. You’re guaranteed some incredible sightings.
- Horseback safaris: Enjoy a new perspective on your surroundings. Let one of our gorgeous horses trot you along our scenic trails, scoping out wildlife, birdlife, and many other interesting creatures along the way. Choose from a morning experience starting at 7 am or a late afternoon safari from 3 pm.
- Quad bike safaris: Calling all the adventurous holidaymakers and the young-at-heart! Our quad bike safaris add a sprinkle of adrenaline to your game viewing. The 50cc Suzuki quad bikes are plenty of fun to drive (in either manual or automatic), and you’ll be well-equipped with the necessary gear to ensure a safe and memorable wildlife encounter. Choose from four starting times – 8 am, 11 am, 2 pm, or 4 pm.
- Hot air balloon safaris: Soak up the sunshine and take in some absolutely breathtaking views on a hot air balloon safari. Rest assured it’ll be simultaneously the most peaceful and invigorating experience you’ll ever have!
6. We spoil you with wintertime comforts
All 20 of our safari-style tents are equipped with air conditioning to keep you toasty and snug when the temperature dips. They also have tea and coffee making facilities, so you can brew a steaming cuppa whenever you need a pick-me-up.
When it comes to meals, our talented chefs are ready to serve up the tastiest winter warmers based on your preferences. Think satisfying soups, hearty stews, perfect South African potjies, and classic braai favourites – gourmet boerie rolls, anyone?
